And the Countdown begins!

June 28, 2006 · 1 Comment

Brought to you by rollingstone.com:

The completely useless, utterly tasteless, but guiltily delightful:

Pete Doherty Drug Access/Rehab Escape/Deathwatch Countdown!

Come on! It’s not every day you see someone who’s more famous for his drug habit than his music (ask any noob on the street HERE who he is; It’s either a shrug of the shoulders or recognition of him being Kate Moss’s perpetually stumbling beau).

I never liked the Libertines, anyway…

Tribute, Part 2

One of William Talcott’s old lovers has set up a guestbook in his honor.

You can view it here. Signing it would even be MORE awesome! :)

Given some recent nasty rivalry over the World Cup lately (it was even reported in THIS country) here’s my bit to encourage some luv between my British and German peeps…

So what’s a little Eurodisco in the morning?

The Casey Kasem Panty Raid Brigade Weekly Top 10, June 18, 2006 - 2 days late, but whatevah…

June 20, 2006 · 1 Comment

And to noone’s surprise, the number 1 song is by…

I’m in a bit of a quandry here…I would LOVE to share “Take a Bow”, but I got it off a leaked CD, and the source of that leak has now been plugged.  Technically, what I would be doing would be a tad bit…er…illegal.  And I don’t wish to get my site shut down due to the overzealous efforts of some hard up record company wonk.

So here’s what I’ll do.

Up on yousendit for 7 days are three live versions of new Muse tracks from the BBC Radio 1 Weekend show (well, Starlight IS #2, after all).  Ogg Vorbised, of course! :p

Also, from the about to be departed Tops of the Pops, here is a performance of Supermassive Black Hole (from two days ago!).  Despite my professed distaste for this song, I have to say, this particular run through kicks some MAJOR ass!

So, with all that out of the way, let’s talk about Song #6.

Why this song is so cool: When I was a youngster, I went through a two year period where I was ALL about the Beatles.  So, of course, this song brings back a lot of pleasant childhood memories.  Not only does my man Ben Folds regurgitate (huh?) the back in the day vibes, he keeps the original melancholy of the song alive while making it his own.

Where can I find it?: Eh…I d/l’ed it off of Audiography during “fave cover tunes” week.  So here it is on yousendit for 7 days.

In the meantime, here’s some live Folds sweetness

And yet, even more (kids, cover your ears, he’s covering Doctor Dre!)!

and finally, Ben with a string orchestra, singing about angry dwarfs and solemn faces:

Enjoy ‘em all!

Tribute

June 15, 2006 · 4 Comments

Many years ago, when I fancied myself a poet (extra) ordinaire, I gathered with some shining lights of the San Francisco writer's scene at William Talcott's out in the Sunset for some eats and poetry. I had kinda lost touch with most of the folks from that group (well, we all still would occasionally exchange emails, and I still get group notices from Ed, and I swear to God I'll be back in SF to attend those things), but William was a cat who was hard to forget: hard drinking, hard living, gruff as all out, but a hell of a writer, and as giving to the artistic spirit as anyone could be. We used to have a lot of fun at his place when he held the group there.

I got an email from my old poetry group bud Ed Mycue this evening: William Talcott died last week.

Here are a few of his published musings.
As I mentioned, I kinda lost touch with most of the folks in the group, but I'm sure there'll be a more public memorial planned.

To say that I'd read any of my drivel at his memorial would be laughable (not to mention unrealistic), but I'm thinking of putting together a little memorial to him.

Back soon…it's gonna be a long night…

Ann, Ann, Ann…

June 8, 2006 · 2 Comments

I was going to take the Henry Rollins route and title this post "Shut the fuck up, Ann". However, despite having been married to a men's rights activist for the past 11 years, I'm still maintaining some level of feminist decorum. So…

1st thing I need to ask Ann is, uh, Why? And why on The Situation with Tucker Carlson? That dweeb doesn't deserve the audience for your misplaced virtrol. The Daily Show would have been a much better venue, if only because Jon Stewart's smackdowns while obvious (Bill Bennett, anyone) would have been so much more entertaining than Tucker's ernest honkings.

"These women should just take their money and shut up!"

Uh…ok…this just begs for a nasty comeback, but I'm in too good of a mood to go there today.

I guess Ms. Coulter thought she was going into friendly territory appearing on Tucker's show. But even he was mortified, even days afterward, by some of the statements she made.

Now, I will agree with her on one point. Of course the women were self-absorbed in thinking the "terrorist attacks only happened to them". Obviously, Ms. Coulter has never lost a loved one, nor has she had to deal with the emotional, physical, and finanical aftermath of losing a loved one, especially after a catastrophic event such as 9/11. I'm not a big fan of most East Coast upper class types either ("self-absorbed" and "elitist" doesn't even begin to describe how I feel about some of these peeps normally, but whatevah…), but, IMHO, the human condition dictates that when one suffers tragedy, one does what one can to pick oneself back up. When your life has been shattered, it CAN take a while to get over it. You need to do what you can to heal. Can you BLAME these women for being "self-absorbed"? They're fucking HEALING, for chrissakes!

As for using "grief for political points"…well, if seeing about getting some justice done and seeing closure is getting political points, more power to them!

The rest of the world has hated on her for her "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much." comment. So no need to go there.

I was never a big Coulter fan, but I was always intrigued by her life path: She grew up a hippie, was a devout Libertarian for a while. But I guess that profile wasn't high enough so she sold her political soul to the Republicans and became a right wing lapdog.

But this time, if Tucker's any indication (I don't care if he's said more than a few times he's a Libertarian, himself; he'll always be a spoiled little frat boy from La Jolla, where they all fiercely tow the Repub party line), even the right wing's sending her to the dog house.

There are some folks out there who still love her, 'tho. Take the aforementioned Henry Rollins. He even wrote her a nice little love letter:

Imports and Exports

June 6, 2006 · 1 Comment

WordPress introduced the ability to import Live Journal posts last week. Which is cool, since I'm considering bailing on Live Journal at some point, but bad, since there's no way in WordPress to export your posts anywhere - even to another WordPress journal, should one ever decide to take it off the WP grid and onto one's own domain (I'm considering a workaround - details once I decide to update my website).

Anyway, thought I'd try out the function, and exported the month of Oct 2005 from Live Journal into this Journal.

Everything worked out just fine, except for a couple of things:

1. My post tags didn't translate into categories - everything was just recategorized as "Miscellaneous"

2. Even more troubling, the security levels on many of my LJ entries did not translate into WP AT ALL. I had to go through and password protect a few of them. Some of them were private, and I'd probably go and make them private again at some point. But for right now, they're just password protected. I also took out posts that were specificallly LJ related.
Hmmm…I'll go try another month and see what happens…

February…that was QUITE the month for me. I was little mouthy then. Forgive me.

Oh dear God…February not only was a busy month, it was QUITE emotional for me as well. Note the amount of posts I had to protect. I had QUITE a few issues going on that I could only tell a few people about. And all that effort just to keep aspects of my once happy go lucky public life a little less so. Especially after I swore I'd never discuss interpersonal work issues in a public blog ever again. Such a friggin' pain!
Still, it's nice to go over a few of those mistakes I made, just as a reminder not to do them again.

P.S. About those "protected" posts, to someone in mind, feel free to try to figure out the passwords to them. I'd suggest trying to spell something backwards to get into them. If that doesn't work, well, the post wasn't about you! :p
