The war on YouTube…O RLY?

July 23, 2006 · 2 Comments

There’s a lot of media fuss over YouTube videos uploaded by American soldiers dissing their roles in Iraq.

Yet, reports are that when folks go to try to find those particular videos on YouTube, results either only show mostly “Positive” images, or have been “pulled by owner”.

Or, most likely, pulled “at the insistence of the owner’s commanding officer”.

Don’t think “they” haven’t been watching.

What most people don’t know is that soldiers do NOT have the same rights as civilians. Civilians, in fact, officially rank higher than they do. They CANNOT say and do as they please. No matter what their intent is. Unless it can be read as being completely “on message” in every way, shape or form.

Which means this video, the first one shown on the linked results list, showing our soldiers in a negative light despite it’s presumed intent, will probably not be up there for much longer:

Peeps, YouTube is no longer the online video democracy it’s been touted to be. If you REALLY want your message to get out, use Ifilm.com. Or Hipcast. Smaller audience = effective message.

I have been wondering about soldier videos. Thanks for answering my curiosity, I guess they do have to go through channels to say what they want. Did you see the video about the soldiers that made a rap album. “live from iraq” or something - they were featured in stars and stripes - so I guess the military does give some leeway(sp?).
